Two Birds on the Tree of Life – Higher Self – Soul, Lower Self – Ego

Lower selfego, individual self   – Higher self – soul, universal self

Meditate on Mascaro’s translation of Mundaka Upanishad, Part three Chapter 1, V1 to 3

“There are two birds, two sweet friends, who dwell on the self same tree.  One eats the fruits thereof, and the other looks on in silence.

The first is the human soul, who is resting on the tree, though active, feels sad in his unwisdom. But on beholding the power and the glory of the higher spirit, he becomes free from sorrow”

Take some time to meditate and consider these words.  Seek to reflect on your higher self and acknowledge your lower self and how it impacts on your life.

The Soul Bird Book Review

Ancient Sanskrit Poem – Look well to this day

Ancient Sanskrit Poem

Photo –  Ancient Town Hall, Naxos, Greece – special memories with my special yoga friend Penny

Look well to this day, for it is life

the very best of life

in its brief course lie all

the realities & truths of existence

the joy of growth, the splendour of action,

the glory of power

For yesterday is but a memory & tomorrow is only a vision

but if well-lived, makes every yesterday a memory of happiness & every tomorrow

a vision of hope look well therefore to this day

Ancient Sanskrit Poem

De stress with this Breathing Technique

When your feeling stressed have you ever noticed that your breath feels short and irregular? When relaxed the opposite is felt. Observe how you breath when relaxed. Your exhalations extend longer than the length of your inhalations.

To promote relaxation we can focus on gently extending our exhalation by one or two seconds. Each exhalation can be twice the length of the inhalation. Enjoy the feeling of relaxation.

Give it a try

Meditate on this – The Journey by Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew

what you had to do, and began,

though the voices around you

kept shouting

their bad advice –

though the whole house

began to tremble

and you felt the old tug

at your ankles

“Mend my life!”

each voice cried.

But you didn’t stop.

You knew what you had to do.

though the wind pried

with its stiff fingers

at the very foundations,

though their melancholy

was terrible.

It was already late

enough, and a wild night,

and the road full of fallen branches and stones.

But little by little,

as you left their voices behind,

the stars began to burn

through the sheets in the clouds,

and there was a new voice

which slowly

recognized your own,

that kept you company

as you strode deeper and deeper into the world,

determined to do

the only thing you could do –

determined to save

the only life you could save.

Dynamic Mudra Mantra

During this mudra (yoga hand gesture) the fingers move accompanied with mantra Sa, Ta, Na, Ma. As you exhale place one of your fingertips on the tip of each thumb. While inhaling extend the fingers again. Co-ordinate this with the mantra syllables;

Speaking ‘Saa’ press together the thumb and index finger;

Speaking ‘Taa’ use middle finger and thumb;

Speaking ‘Naa’ use ring finger and thumb;

Speaking ‘Maa’ use little finger and thumb.

Use both hands and practice this dynamic mudra mantra for 5 to 30 minutes.

This dynamic mudra is used to promote brain activity and to relax the nervous system. It promotes concentration and creates a feel of inner calmness.

Aim to breathe slowly and focus on an even inhale and exhale. Breathing slowly will help your body and mind to relax.

Give it try. Notice how you feel.

Mantra for New Ventures – OM GUM GANAPATAYEI NAMAHA

OM GUM GANAPATAYEI NAMAHA is a mantra chanted when starting new ventures.

The practice of this mantra has been used to remove obstacles, negative energies and thoughts. To reduce anxiety, release and to let go of emotions.  Clearing stale any energies which can make way for new ventures. A fresh start, a new beginning, a new direction.

Freedom within – Meditation

Meditate on these lyrics, Freedom by Jane Winther (musician, singer, songwriter).

Read each word slowly, with your full attention on each word.  Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings.  Take time to meditate.

Freedom within

Deep within.

Freedom is finding myself,

anywhere in this world,

Moment of silence, moment of joy.

Feeling free in this moment,

Feeling Home,

freedom within,

deep within,

Freedom within

Deep within.

Healing Meditations – Soothing the nervous system

Healing meditations can help soothe the nervous system.

If you are feeling confused, calmly reassure yourself that confusion will pass with rest and healing. You may find comfort from looking at an inspirational photograph or book. Focus your full attention on one word at a time. Take time to read only one sentence or paragraph.

If you feel weighed down by your nervous feelings, imagine the feelings as an huge weight. Then put it down so that you can go for a walk or to spend some time with your friends.

Acknowledging your feelings can be simple way of relaxing and going with the flow of your emotions with the understanding and confidence that you can ride out the storm. Allow yourself to rest and be quiet.  Feel reassured and comforted. Embrace a caring attitude to yourself.
